AWWA A100

Standard, developed by the non-profit American Water Works Association, which provides the minimum requirements for design, installation, performance, and manufacturing of products used in the construction of water wells.

AWWA B100

Standard, developed by the non-profit American Water Works Association, which provides the minimum requirements for the purchase and installation of granular filter material used in the construction of water and wastewater filtration plants.

Effective Size (E.S.)

The sieve-size opening that will just pass 10% (by dry weight) of a representative sample of a granular material. The units of E.S. are usually in millimeters.

Geothermal

Geothermal energy is created by the heat of the earth. It generates reliable power and emits almost no greenhouse gases. The earth's geothermal resource represents significant untapped energy.

NSF/ANSI Standard 61

The nationally recognized health effects standard for all devices, components and materials which contact drinking water.  NSF/ANSI Standard 61 includes criteria for testing and evaluating products to ensure they do not leach contaminants into the water that would be a health concern. These contaminants include those regulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and Health Canada, as well as any other non-regulated compounds that may be of concern.

Porosity

Ratio of the volume of void space in a sample divided by the total volume of that sample. Porosity is usually expressed in percent.

Uniformity Coefficient (U.C.)

A ratio calculated as the sieve-size opening that will just pass 60% (by dry weight) of a representative sample of a granular material divided by the sieve-size opening that will just pass 10% (by dry weight) of the same sample.
